Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity at The Shops at North Bridge

Sep 13, 2011

It’s been a busy few weeks but I knew I had to share pictures with you and tell you about the fashion show I attended the week of FNO. I was invited to view the fashion show titled Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity at The Shops at North Bridge.

For lunch we got to treat ourselves to chocolate croissants and champagne while we watch a fall fashion that followed the contemporary styles of this season with the most famous Impressionist painters of the 1860′s to 1880′s. I thought The Shops at North Bridge and The Art Institute did a fab job with decor, the music, and the afternoon treats, just a perfect afternoon for the show, it felt like Paris was brought to us.

This show was an exclusive sneak peak at the future Art Institute exhibition, Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity, that will be going to Paris, then New York, and finally Chicago the summer of 2013. I felt very lucky that I got a sneak peak at the exhibit and the fashion show was amazing, so creative.

The 1860′s to 1880′s is actually my favorite French artistic time period. Gustave Caillaotte, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet are a few of my favorites. I can look at their paintings for ages.

The late 1800′s was a time when you saw the rise of the department store and the growth of fashion magazines. There was an interests in the artistic and literary elite. The fashion was the beginning of discovering new visual and verbal expressions. Ten years after Impressionism, the French would see a forever change in fashion with the rise of fashion houses like Lanvin which was establish in 1889.

As you will see from my photographs (Sorry, they are not the best) and the painting of that time, that even today we still bring the style and sophistication of then into the style and sophistication of today.

Can you see the similarities in the paintings and the photographs below?

Caillebotte - Paris Street; Rainy Day,

Renoir - Portrait of the Actress Jeanne Samary

Renoir - La Parisienne

Renoir - La Loge (The Theater Box)

Tissot - Young Girl in Red Jacket

Tissot - Seaside

Morisot - Figure of a Woman (Before the Theater)
