Interview with Fashion Illustrator ~ Hayden Williams

I instantly became a fan Hayden Williams via Twitter when I saw someone tweet out one of his fashion illustrations. (I believe it was the Mary-Kate and Ashley drawing featured below.) If you haven’t seen his work yet then your here’s your chance to see some of his amazing illustrations and if you’re already a fan then I have a great interview with the very talented, Hayden Williams.

Hayden Williams is a fashion illustrator and aspiring fashion designer living in London. He has drawn everything from celebrities, to fashion icons, to the newest fashion collections but with a almost cartoonist look to each illustration. Each drawing is equally stunning and it’s really hard to not love them all.

KELLY: “I have to say I’ve been a fan of your illustrations since I first found you on Twitter. You are so extremely talented. It says on your Tumblr that you have been drawing since 3 years old. That’s amazing! When did you become interested in drawing fashion illustrations?”

HAYDEN: “Thank you soo much! Yes, i’ve been drawing since i was 3. It was a natural progression from drawing female Disney characters as a child, to professional fashion illustrations/designing. Being self taught is something i am fortunate to have! Subconsciously, fashion was always there, but it really hit me when i was about 15-16. It’s been going strong ever since!!”

KELLY: “A few of my favorite drawings that you have recently drawn are your spring and fall collection illustrations. Do you have any favorite illustrations, a drawing that you could just never part with?”

HAYDEN: “Each new illustration I do becomes my favourite at that time so it’s hard to choose one! I do have some standout illustrations though, the ones that are featured are some of my favourites right now!”

KELLY: “Where do you pull your own inspirations for each fashion illustration you do?”

HAYDEN: “I get inspiration from Women! I always have a particular kind of woman in mind when I sketch/design. The Hayden Williams woman if you will! She’s strong, sexy, confident, knows what she wants and how to get it! She loves luxury and wearing clothes that flatter her….so she wears Hayden Williams ;)”

KELLY: “I love that! The Hayden Williams women! I’ve seen that you have also drawn a few celebrities, have they noticed your artwork?”

HAYDEN: “Yes, I love merging fashion illustration/design with Pop Culture. Most people affiliate me/my work with the pop mega star Rihanna! I forwarded a fashion illustration I created of her via Twitter and she instantly followed me on Twitter and sent me a direct message (private message) telling me how much she loved the design and how talented I am! I created another illustration of her a few months later. It was inspired by her S&M music video which had some iconic looks! Next thing i knew, she used it as her Twitter icon and that’s when my profile kinda blew up a lot more!”

“The icing on the cake was getting to meet her after she personally invited me to the first of her 10 sold out shows at London’s O2 Arena. She requested for me to bring my sketches along! It was amazing meeting her!! All of what she has done for me shows the true star that she is! Rihanna said she wants to see my designs become a reality so she can wear them and who would say no to that??!!! She is a really genuine girl with soo many accomplishments under her belt, it’s incredibly inspiring! Having her as a fan is incredible…..i have Twitter to thank for that!”

KELLY: “Wow! That is really amazing and what an accomplishment! I know that you would love to eventually become a designer, so who inspires you in the fashion industry? Is there anyone you would love to collaborate with?”

HAYDEN: “Yes, the aim is to definitely get my designs made by a professional team of people in the near future! I love designers like Elie Saab, Jason Wu, Versace…..the labels that create clothes that flatter a woman’s body and never go out of style! That’s the kind of fashion that i love…..timeless, sexy and effortlessly stylish!”

KELLY: “I agree, I love designers who create timeless and effortless pieces too! Hayden, where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?”

HAYDEN: “I would love to have established myself a lot more in the industry, possibly collaborate with some amazing people and work hard to make my dreams a reality!! I want to see the fashion elite and iconic stars wearing Hayden Williams in the very near future!”
